Spring has arrived, blue skies, glorious sunshine and this is seed sowing week!
I decided to insulate the greenhouse last year, and invested in a little heater so I've had some herbs, lettuce and spring onions slowly growing in there over the winter. But now it's time to properly start the growing season. I've already got a few seeds in:
Celery ~ Loretta & Victoria
French Beans ~ Slenderette
Leeks ~ Pandora
Carrots ~ Early Nantes
Celeriac ~ Monarch
Beetroot should also be on the list, a lovely trio of crimson Boltardy, stripey Chioggia and yellow Burpees Golden but something has been nibbling at the delicate seedlings - slugs, snails or has a mouse taken up residence in the warm greenhouse? I really hope it's not the latter - I'm not very brave when it comes to getting rid of mice! Strangely though they haven't eaten the juicy french beans seedlings that are beginning to emerge.
This week there is a stack of seeds to sow - sweetcorn, tomatoes, pumpkin and squashes, courgettes, chard, more french beans and another batch of beetroot, coriander, dill, basil ...
Lady Christl potatoes are chitting nicely on the kitchen window sill. I haven't tried this variety before (they're first earlies) but they are supposed to be a lovely waxy salad potato. I've only got a few so they'll be going in a potato growing bag this year, rather than in the garden.
That's about all for this month but a busy few weeks ahead so they'll be plenty more to share with you next time!
